Welcome to Jason Strohm's Type Font Basics Tutorial. you will be covering the three main type font styles: Serif, San Serif, and Script.

Part 1 of this tutorial gives a brief description of each main type font styles.

Part 2 covers the history of each main style to give you a better understanding of each.

Part 3 explains the current meaning and proper usage of each main type font style.

Part 4 discusses readability concerns. It covers traditional print materials and the new issues with digital medias.


Part 5 is a glossary of terms used by printers, graphic designers, and other print professionals.

Font Term Description
Bold A thicker overall line width of the standard version of a typeface.
Cursive Typefaces resembling handwritten script.
Font A set of characters all with the same type face and with the same point size. (American spelling of the English 'fount').
Italic Letters that slant forward.
Kerning Kerning is the horizontal space between letters.
Leading The vertical spacing between text lines
Light A thinner overall line width of the standard version of a typeface.
Point size Point size is based on the inch. 72 points equal one inch.
Roman Used to identify upright typefaces, as opposed to italic or cursive.
Sans serif A typeface with no serifs.
Script Type designed to suggest writing with a brush or pen.
Serifs The short cross lines at the ends of letters in certain typefaces.
Style Style refers to the shape of a character such as serif, san serif, or script.
Weight The degree of thick or thin of the typeface.
