Welcome to Jason Strohm's Type Font Basics Tutorial. you will be covering the three main type font styles: Serif, San Serif, and Script. Part 1 of this tutorial gives a brief description of each main type font styles. Part 2 covers the history of each main style to give you a better understanding of each. Part 3 explains the current meaning and proper usage of each main type font style. Part 4 discusses readability concerns. It covers traditional print materials and the new issues with digital medias. ![]() Serif Type Fonts were created when the images were chiseled into wood or stone. The Serifs were created to indicate the end of letters ![]() San Serif Type Fonts was originally created in the 18th century, but was not culturally popular until the early 1930s. Because of the great depression, American business owners made signs using this letter style to save on advertising costs. ![]() Script Type Fonts is the oldest of the font styles and was originally found along with cave drawings. Later in the middle ages, this font style became the preferred writing style in northern europe and asia.
